Passages

DOROTHY EVA MCKENZIE (nee GRINKE) It is with great sadness the family of Dorothy Eva McKenzie (nee Grinke) announce her passing on June 20, 2016 just days shy of her 89th birthday. Dorothy/Dodie/Gramma/Gramma Dode was a wonderful wife, mother, grandma and great-grandma. She is survived by her husband Ed; children, Marna (Doug), Joan, Jim (Paule); daughter-in-law Anne-Marie; grandchildren, Doug, Kim, Cathy (Mike), Mary-Anne (Harry), Christopher, Marna and Michael; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Mackenzie and Adelyn; sisters, Joan (Gerald) Vincent and Evelyn Aikman and numerous nieces and nephews. Dorothy was predeceased by her son Chuck; grandson Joshua and son-in-law Jim Corley; as well as six siblings and several family members and dear friends. Mom loved competitive sports and activities from an early age, competing successfully with the Daniel Mac track team and winning four Manitoba provincial curling championships, along with one Alberta provincial title. Her successful curling career led to her induction into the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame in 1996. After her own retirement from the game, she continued to enjoy the sport, traveling the country watching her granddaughter curl. She also enjoyed playing Bridge and as with everything she took on, she pursued Duplicate Bridge with great ambition and successfully obtained her master points status, an accomplishment she was very proud of. With both bridge and curling, she would share detailed accounts of specific hands played card by card or ends shot by shot, years later. Family and friends were her passion, as Mom took great pride in all of her family's activities and achievements. She took great pleasure in hosting parties, cooking and baking, enjoying time at Matlock when her children were young, dancing and singing, knowing the lyrics to many songs. Christmas Eve parties were a long-standing family tradition where Dorothy played the role, Mrs. Claus. Dorothy was deeply loved and will be missed terribly.
