What do you bid?

Here is an interesting situation. You certainly do not have the traditional strength to overcall but you know partner has heart length with at least some values. If West passes you are likely in for a bad score. However if you bid partner will probably not play you for 9 HCPs!

I think 3 is a good call. You won’t get hurt much and if the opponents bid 3 partner will have a pretty good idea of what is best. Your A and KQ should help somewhat on defence. Still if you are going to bid there is a better call, although some people might think I am crazy! I will tell you what I recommend as an aggressive matchpoint action in a minute. But first here is the full deal:

♠ Q J 10 6
♥ K 10 8 5
♦ 10
♣ K Q J 9

♠ 7 2
♥ A Q J 3 2
♦ J 7
♣ A 10 5 2

Bridge deal

♠ K 8 5
♥ 9 7 6 4
♦ A 4 2
♣ 8 6 3

♠ A 9 4 3
♥ -
♦ K Q 9 8 6 5 3
♣ 7 4

Double! You do have four spades and partner might be good enough to convert to penalties. Either way you are in for a good score. 2 is down a couple while 4♠ is makeable.

As an aside if 2 goes pass pass to north I think he should balance with 2♠.
